Q&A With Dr. Matt
What inspired you to become a chiropractor?
My interest in biomechanical principles of the human body developed towards the end of secondary school. Combined with a desire to help people, I initially studied Myotherapy at RMIT for 3 years. After graduating and working alongside various Chiropractors as a Myotherpaist, I came to understand the main cause of muscular imbalance was in the spine. Naturally the principles and premise of Chiropractic resonated with me and my interest further developed. I came to understand the proper application of Chiropractic could help a variety of problems beyond just muscle pain. A close friend of mine had recently become a Chiropractor and his demonstration of the Gonstead system inspired me to expand my knowledge base. I then embarked on the journey to become a Chiropractor myself, commencing the course at RMIT in the 2000 intake.
How long have you been practising chiropractic care?
I qualified as a Chiropractor in 2004, so I just rolled past my 20-year anniversary last year in 2024.
What types of conditions do you specialise in treating?
In practice we see a variety of problems, mainly in patients struggling with low back or neck issues. However, I have a strong interest in disc issues such as bulging/herniation, sciatica, acute neck pain and back pain.
What do you enjoy most about being a chiropractor?
The best thing about being a Chiropractor in an acute care management clinic is to resolve presenting complaints as quickly as possible. Fast results happen consistently and predictably through a hands-on precise adjustment of a properly identified problem. Detailed analysis and examination are paramount to fast and holding results. We are a crucial part of a suffering patient's recovery and to be the pivotal component in turning these cases around is truly a blessing.
Can you explain your approach to chiropractic treatment?
My approach in Chiropractic is correction versus a standard application of therapeutic treatment. Correction requires dedication to analysis and examination in order to be exactly where the patient requires support or help. A precise hands-on adjustment to an accurately identified problem creates the best circumstance for the body to heal, reducing the symptoms. Symptoms are an expression of the body's inability to heal or repair distressed tissue.
What are your goals for the future of your practice?
My goal for the practice at this stage of my career is to simply help more people. To see more new patients and less returns translates to resolving presenting complaints as quickly as possible. I also enjoy mentoring students and young Chiropractors in giving them the best education and helping the next generation become excellent practitioners.
